Teachers Helping Teachers Canada
provided participants with a once in a lifetime unique opportunity to learn,
volunteer and educate in one of the most beautiful places on earth.
The THTC participants
traveled to Kenya, participated in
an African Cultural Studies program in Nairobi, then traveled to a safari camp
on the edge of the Maasai Mara, collaborating with local teachers, sharing
workshops, mentoring and immersing in community activities, such as, water
walks, beading and building..
Participants interacted with local teachers, promoting mutual collaboration between educational professionals from Canada and Kenya. Sharing experiences involved discussions about content selection, knowledge about diverse teaching and learning styles, and delivery strategies. They spent time teaching and mentoring at local schools, building classrooms, and helping in practical ways to improve the local community, while interacting intensively with the local cultural groups, such as, the Maasai and Kipsigis tribes. Moreover, concrete learning about development, world issues, leadership, environmental conservation and biodiversity through interactive seminars encouraged individuals to consider the importance and challenges of much needed development.
